No special software required, no accounts, no cartridge blackmail, it just did its job. and if it hadn't died after nearly a decade of service I'd be using it still. I previously had a Brother MFC for several years and had reterofitted ink tanks to it. the hardware seems capable enough (if a bit flimsy), but the software seems to have been written by monkeys or scammers, with no focus on reliability, and a strong need to have you spend as much as possible on HP cartidges and send them your usage data In short, when it works it does an ok job. and if you run out of one colour you can forget about even black & white prints, the whole machine sits there and sulks until you replace the "depleted" yellow, cyan, or magenta cartidge, even if the black one's full. Annoyingly HP have bent over backwards to prevent the use of alternative brands, refilled cartridges, or tank systems, even releasing updated firmware specifically to lock it down further. ![]() if I pay the regular retail price I'll have paid more for ink after only three changes than I did to buy the printer!
